Long Island’s Gateway Playhouse, a theater company, doesn’t usually encourage horrible acting. But it’s different with this annual haunted attraction, where insane clowns and garden-variety lunatics run rampant on highly detailed, appropriately grungy sets. The level of commitment from actors at this acclaimed local theater rises to truly terrifying levels. That relates to lighting, props, and even smells — the “blood” odor in a zombie scene has famously nauseated some visitors. Gateway’s Haunted Playhouse is Long Island’s top-rated haunted house. The haunted house is situated on a 100-year-old estate populated with all sorts of gruesome creatures; it is not recommended for kids 13 and under.
